'Sexuality and Healing' will be a freewheeling, moderated discussion about ways that many of us have suffered trauma, shame and guilt in our journey of sexual self-acceptance. Emphasis will be placed on how we can achieve healing and, in turn, offer healing to our community. This discussion will revolve around the issue of our sex-negative culture and its often unhealthy and destructive attitudes toward human sexuality. Many of us have been scarred by our religious background or abuse or various types of trauma. Even when we feel that we’ve stripped ourselves of negative self-judgment, those old ‘tropes’ can often come back to haunt us. Sharing our stories and listening to the stories of others can help discard those negative feelings of judgment. Simply talking about it can provide relief from lingering shame. Sharing aloud can also stimulate discussion about the all-important element of healing in our most intimate relationships with ourselves and with others. Emphasis will always be placed on moving forward: how we can achieve healing and, in turn, offer healing to our community.
Do you feel that your religious or cultural background has helped or hindered you in your search for a sexual life unencumbered by the judgment of others? Have you judged yourself harshly in the past because of your beliefs or because of beliefs that surrounded you as a child? Are you looking for ways to heal from years of cultural influence or simply from the judgments and influence of a society that is all too bound up in sex-negativity? This discussion group is an opportunity to tell your story, listen to the stories of others, share insights, provide care, and seek healing.
The discussion will be moderated by L3 member Nic Reveles, a Somatic Sex Educator trained in dealing with trauma through a somatic practice based on breath and bodywork.
